You want both a solid attack and a heavy, weighty body.
I usually build kicks with two layers: body + attack.
The body is often from Softube Heartbeat, and I layer the top-end attack with Sonic Academy Kick2.
// Haven’t picked up Kick3 yet, but it looks like they’ve added a ton of features.
Assuming you’ve got enough low-end, a key part of that “techno feel” is a pitch sweep that drops from the mid-low down into the low range.
Heartbeat does this really well—it gives you a nice, full-bodied kick that’s easy to layer.
If you try making a kick on a regular synth with a pitch envelope, you’ll notice pretty quickly that ADSR alone doesn’t give you the curve you want.
That’s where dedicated drum machines really shine—they’re just built better for this.
Softube’s saturation (like the input gain drive in Modular) adds a really nice punch, so don’t be afraid to push it quite hard.
The decay can get pretty long, so you’ll probably want to control it with a gate or something similar.
I usually crank the saturation to around the level shown in the image.
For harder techno, I’ll push it even further. Then I shape things with pitch/bend—but I wouldn’t rely on this alone for a cutting attack.
I’ve never used a real 909, but this doesn’t feel particularly “authentic,” so if you’re after that exact hardware vibe, this might not be it.
Worth trying the demo if you’re curious.
Sonic Academy Kick2
Heartbeat on its own doesn’t quite cut through, especially for harder techno. That’s where Kick2 comes in.
I mute the main low-end synth part (SUB section) and just use Click1–3 layered on top of Heartbeat.
Being able to tweak pitch helps a lot when fitting it into a track. You can also offset it slightly for some variation.
The click/noise layers might sound thin or overly sharp on their own, but once layered, they sit just right.
Best approach: start from mute and slowly bring them up until you hit the sweet spot.
One thing to watch out for—the default level is pretty hot and hits the limiter easily.
It’s worth asking yourself if you really need to slam the limiter that hard from the start.
